Dear UCR Families,

Congratulations and welcome to the University of California, Riverside (UCR). As a family member of a newly admitted UCR student, you have played a very important role in your student's acceptance to one of the finest universities in the country. We would like to encourage you to continue to play an important role in the development and transition that will take place over the next four years of your student's life.

The Family Orientation Program is created specifically for you by a group of dedicated staff and students, with input from past participants. This program is intended to inform you of very important information about services and programs that will help your student succeed at UCR, and to address transition issues for the student and those who are important in the student's life.

As you review this brochure and the separate brochure mailed to your student outlining the Bear Facts Orientation program, you will note that we have designed two separate programs that will complement one another. It is our hope that your student will gain valuable information concerning his or her major, classes, and the services offered at UCR. Furthermore, family members will receive detailed information to assist your family with transition issues that may arise during the first year and beyond.

Again, congratulations and welcome to the University of California, Riverside. I look forward to meeting you at Orientation. Welcome to the Highlander Family!

Sincerely,

James W. Sandoval
Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs

  • Although Family Orientation is a one-day program, family members who will be in Riverside on the second day of the Student Orientation program will have an opportunity to meet with Counseling Center staff and other family members of new students. Past Participant's Thoughts About Family Orientation

"I went to UCLA many years ago and I never felt like the school cared about how you did. After one day at UCR, I feel like everyone really cares about our kids and wants them to do well. At UCR there is help available everywhere. I'm very impressed with UCR."

"For a public school, I was not expecting the effort and care that everyone expressed. Their devotion to making the college experience as successful and enjoyable as possible was evident in every presentation."

"The Orientation was thoughtfully done-much better and more informative than the Harvard University parent's weekend we attended last fall."

"Family Orientation made us feel very comfortable about sending our son to UCR. Everybody was very informative, polite, gracious, and ready to help. Orientation really made the true meaning of personal touch."

"Orientation was excellent. Thanks for making this experience [child transition into college] easier for parents. It shows that the entire administration takes a caring attitude."
